Prometheus is a 2012 US-British science fiction film with body horror elements directed by Ridley Scott and written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron. The film follows a similar theme to Scott's 1979 film Alien: At the end of the 21st century, a research group on board the spaceship Prometheus is investigating evidence of the extraterrestrial origins of human life.Originally, Prometheus - Dark Signs was intended as a prequel to the 1979 film Alien - The Uncanny Beings from an Alien World. However, the script evolved into a stand-alone story and is thus a new beginning for the series. Also involved in the film was artist HR Giger, who had already designed the "Alien" and the damaged alien spaceship for Ridley Scott's first Alien film in the 1970s. At a press conference in July 2011, Scott announced that the film would contain hardly any digital special effects, but mainly traditional ones, and would be visually remotely reminiscent of Blade Runner.Director Ridley Scott is planning a total of three sequels to Prometheus, with the third ultimately providing the substantive follow-up to his first Alien film from 1979.The film grossed more than $400 million worldwide on a budget of $130 million.
